Beauty on a Budget: 7 Timeless Tips to Save Money on Makeup

(Sorry guys, this post isn't likely to be directly useful to you, but you can share these tips with the girls in your life and look really knowledgeable and respectful about girlie things.)

Makeup is one of those items that I have a love/hate relationship with. I love trying new colors, dolling up my best friend's teenage daughter for prom, and goofing around with the girls for a spa night at home.

Now, don't get me wrong, I can go weeks without wearing makeup and be perfectly happy; it's not essential to my life. But it's fun to be creative and play with color combinations and application techniques.

Makeup also holds great potential for a shopping addiction. Before I had kids (when I had considerably more spending money), I used to shop for makeup on a regular basis. I stopped shopping at the drugstore and began venturing into the department store's line of more pricey products. The products were nice, but the price tag was outrageous. When my kids came along, I simply couldn't afford to keep up. I learned how to make what I had last longer and how to spend significantly less on my makeup.

Here are eight of my top tips for saving money on makeup:

1. Start with skin care.

No amount of quality cosmetics will make up for basic skin issues. Dry skin, blemishes, enlarged pores, etc must be treated in order for your make up to wear well and look good. If the canvas is a poor quality, the makeup doesn't matter. If you're going to spend more on anything, splurge on a quality skin care kit and use it regularly.

2. Buy your pressed or loose powder a shade darker than usual and mix in a little talcum powder.

This makes your powder last much longer and doesn't affect the overall look of your makeup.

3. Mix in a little quality moisturizer with your liquid foundation to make application smoother.

This also stretches how long your foundation will last since you're essentially using less each day. This technique allows me to purchase a single bottle of high-quality foundation and make it last for 10-12 months.

4. Always apply cosmetics with a brush, not your fingers.

Applying foundation with your fingers means you're wasting makeup on your hands that will be washed down the drain. Using a brush allows you to precisely apply the product exactly where you want it.

5. Shop for your favorite makeup regularly.

Popular drugstores like Rite Aid often have half-off sales to help clear out older inventory and make room for new products. You can stock up on the essentials at a fraction of the price during these sales. Sometimes you can even find a too-bright shade on clearance and mix it with a lighter shade you already own to make it useable.

6. Visit your local department store's cosmetics counter for a complimentary make over.

Most companies don't charge for this service (knowing you're likely to buy something before you leave) and this a great way to get a fresh look for special occasions without investing in new cosmetics.

7. Experiment with color.

Many items, such as nail polish, blush, and eye shadow can be mixed to create new colors. This can result in a new favorite shade or a new look without spending a dime on additional colors.

8. Always use a setting product to hold your look in place.

Topcoat for your nails, lipstick treatments, and loose powder are wise investments since they prevent the need for touchups.

Even if you're addicted to a pricey name brand cosmetics line, you can still save money by adding a few steps to your daily routine and being on the lookout for a good bargain.

What money-saving makeup tips have you found to be useful?

Editor's Note: Did you know about the service called $5 meal plans? For $5 a month, they send you recipes of delicious, healthy, yet cheap food that costs just $5 a meal.

Several of my friends signed up and they are able to eat at home more because the instructions are easy to follow, making everything convenient. The deal also comes with grocery shopping lists, which saves them so much time. Check it out yourself by clicking here and you too may be able to save more and become healthier at the same time.

Everything You Need To Know About Saving Money On Beauty ...

You don't need me to remind you that the beauty industry is fucking huge. It is worth $445 billion in sales and shows no sign of stopping any time soon. And when it comes to makeup, there are endless brands to choose from and countless places to shop. Understandably, then, it can be totally overwhelming to build your perfect makeup kit while staying in your budget ' and without sacrificing quality.

This is where expert advice comes in. I (virtually) sat down with kickass makeup artist (and my former colleague) Brianna Solberg. A former Sephora makeup artist, Solberg is now freelance, which she balances with her full-time 9-to-5. She is hella talented, passionate, and knowledgeable. I have also never seen someone do a better smoky eye than her. She knows her stuff and provided some really helpful insights about what it means to shop smart for makeup. Read the full interview below to learn where to splurge, where to save, the best stores, the importance of samples, and more.

Where do I start? I've been applying someone's makeup (whether it be my own or a client's) for so long! I really amped up my skills and passion when I worked at Sephora for nearly six years. From there, I had freelancing opportunities in bridal, boudoir, small films, commercial gigs, and for lots of local black-tie events. I did stage makeup and airbrush tanning for a fitness competition once, too! I love being able to pick my hours and be a part of some pretty awesome 'behind the scenes' teams. I've had to taper down some of my business, because my 9-to-5 job during the week has become much more demanding. The awesome thing about being a makeup artist is that it is a creative outlet that I always look forward to.

Where are your favorite places to shop for makeup and why?

Everywhere. I can't stop! I have a soft spot for Sephora ever since I worked there, and it always feels like 'home.' I also love Ulta for their sales, Beautylish for the Ordinary skincare products, Glossier for all my beauty news (and they also make a fantastic lip balm), Nigel's for pro products, Amazon for my applicators and sanitation tools. Sometimes if I'm in the mood to browse in person, my favorite 'beauty counter' world is Nordstrom. I like to stop and swatch all the new shadows from Mac, Lancôme, Dior, Chanel, and YSL to get inspiration.

What are your money-saving hacks when it comes to buying makeup?

Samples are my go-to because I would otherwise be a terrible impulse buyer and it helps me keep my makeup hoarding to a minimum. I have a separate address just to subscribe to all the retail rewards and it helps me stay organized and always be on top of the best deals.

Sometimes I'll go into Sephora with minimal makeup just to have a chance to try on a foundation and walk around the mall to let it 'cook' on my skin and give it a good test drive. I also get a sample or two whenever I'm shopping so I can try a new product. You would be surprised how a little goes a really long way in those sample jars!

What products are always worth the splurge, and why?

I'm willing to splurge on skincare and foundation because I take my skin seriously. It's the most visible feature when thinking about makeup, so I think that should come first. It doesn't matter if you have a $75 luxury brand lipstick if your foundation is the wrong color or finish.

What products can you buy cheaper without sacrificing quality? And why?

Lipstick! There are so many inexpensive lipsticks that are beautiful when wearing the right shade for your skin. It comes down to color for me, because I can make any lipstick stay on if I prep with the right products. Liquid lipsticks are having a 'moment' right now, and I have no shame in my drugstore game when buying up tons of these for my kit.

What are your top 5 luxury brands?

  • Hourglass: I generally stay away from powders but make a huge exception for this brand! They are ethereal, glowy and add the perfect finish to any look. My favorite is using the Mood Light highlighting powder as a blush on lighter skin tones, or as a transition color to blend on medium to dark tones.
  • Dior: Mostly for their mascara primer because it really does work.
  • NARS: I use their tinted moisturizer every day.
  • Laura Mercier: I recommend their Caviar eyeshadow stick in 'amethyst' to everyone. It's the perfect shade and stays on even without a primer.
  • Too Faced: I keep going back to their eyeshadow primer because I know it will work even on oily eyelids.

And your top 5 drugstore brands?

  • Makeup Revolution: This is at Ulta, and they have beautiful complexion products.
  • LA Girl Cosmetics.
  • Catrice Cosmetics (they have an awesome dupe for the Dior Glow lip gloss!).
  • Ardell lashes.
  • L'Oréal mascaras.

What is a common misconception about makeup that you want to clear up?

Airbrush makeup does not always mean you will look 'airbrushed.' To truly look airbrushed would require a photographer with editing skills. Or Snapchat filters, lol.

What's your favorite makeup product ever?

This is the hardest question ever, but I am loving my Glossier Balm Dot Com in 'Birthday.' Lip care is important!

What was the best deal you ever got on makeup?

I kept my Ulta points for a long time and paid next to nothing for a Tarte eyeshadow palette.

Anything else you think we should know?

Ask for advice! The beauty gurus at Sephora, Ulta, and others really do know how to help most of the time. Also, be realistic about expectations. Instagram and beauty bloggers post selfies that look amazing, but in real life, it may look a little over the top if you're just going to class. If you like a photo, maybe think about what it is you are drawn to. I notice people shopping for a specific lipstick just because Kylie Jenner wore it, and end up disappointed when they don't look identical. Use social media as inspiration, not a shopping list.
